Government pledges $8m for bariatric surgery in bid to tackle obesity

The Austin and Alfred hospitals and the Western District Health Service in Hamilton Australia.

It found a 10 per cent tax on unhealthy foods and lap banding for very obese people could avert 270,000 disability-adjusted life years – a World Health Organisation measure of life years lost because of disease – caused by obesity. The report recommended an expansion of access to lap-band surgery.
