Health consequences in adults
The predominant serious health consequences associated with obesity in adults include type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal disorders such as osteoarthritis, and certain cancers.

Some of these health consequences may constitute the principal cause of death such as heart disease, stroke, some cancers; whilst others such as type 2 diabetes.

Bariatric (weight loss) surgery for obesity is considered when other treatments have failed. The effects of the available bariatric procedures compared with medical management and with each other are uncertain. This is an update of a Cochrane review first published in 2003 and most recently updated in 2009.
